It's in the simple things

I've been feeling abit guilty about my non-existence in the Music Ministry. If ever there is a public confession, perhaps this is one now. So, as way of making up for lost time/ effort, I shall blog a little about something related.

We introduced the "Theme Song" idea this year. My "boss'" idea. Not exactly the first time it's done in church, but it does seem like there's a sustained effort to carry this on. Intentionality seems to be the buzz word at Bethel.

We kicked off the year with these two songs, "Open the eyes of my heart", and "Lord, let my heart be good soil". Almost every week, one or both the songs would be sung at service. Haven't quite got sick of them, and now, I learnt that we'll be singing two other songs about grace. So far, they are very well-chosen songs, if you ask me.

Why I titled this entry "it's in the small things". To be honest, I wasn't too impressed with the Theme Song idea at first. It seem so small and insignificant. A no big deal kind of thing. One would imagine to show the church that there's growth and development in a ministry, one would deliver the revolutionary ideas. One wouldn't imagine that something seemingly simple like introducing Theme Songs could have a more sustainable and real impact on us.

But, as I take a step back, and look at this. I see that this simple act has an influence that is much greater. It's in the simple things, it's in the small acts that we practice on and accumulate to bigger disciplines. That result in benefits far greater than what they appear to offer.

Learning a few songs, letting the lyrics of the song permeate us, and cause us to remember God and live our lives in proper responses to Him....that's what these Theme Songs can do for us. Like memory verses, singing them repetitively helps us remember them. It's these simple disciplines we tend to overlook or neglect. If the projector conks out on us again...we can always fall back on these songs we've learnt by hard. If the bible suddenly becomes not available to us, it's the verses we've remembered that will come to mind. Simple things....great benefits.

Word of caution...don't take too long to get yourselves familiarise with the Theme Songs. They change by the month...I think.
