Of (branded) handbags, wallets, and other wacky ideas...

The topic of handbags...specifically, branded handbags, came into frequent discussion recently.

One day, over sms, I was whining to my bro about how I hated my job. Then, he promptly told me, to go buy myself a branded handbag after work, to make myself happy. This is also the same brother who said he'll buy me a PRADA (or was it Gucci) when he starts working. (i wonder....i seriously wonder)

Background on why my bro would offer such a suggestion. (1) I had mentioned to him that my peers-cum-close-gal-pals are carrying branded handbags nowadays, and I wondered how come I can't afford one. We blamed it on CAR and ACCA. (2) We like to follow Celebraties trend. You know how the celebs like to carry branded handbags, like Hermes - the Birkin, Balenciaga, and what nots. (Aside: I like to say Balenciaga...it sounds like a bad word. Hahaha...coo coo...)

Anyway, following global working world trends, it's considered a definitive thing (read: you've made it, or somewhat made it - depending on brand, and what other accessories and clothes you put on) for an executive-working lady to carry a branded handbag.

I'm not really a branded gal (though I think there's materialism in every person, so i wun bother to say I'm not materialistic), nor a handbag gal. So, I thought for awhile if I wanna spend a few grands to buy a LV or a COACH. At the end of the work day, I went home and told my bro, to illustrate where I stand on the global have-i-made-it scale, I told him, I don't think I can afford a branded handbag, maybe a branded wallet. Well, a branded handbag can very well finance a decent OZ trip you noe.

Of course, again, these are just talks to make ourselves happy, and laugh about things. I still have the CAR and ACCA to finance. So, no high end luxury goods for me.

On a related subject, I discovered in a recent edition of Female magazine...something that shocked me. I was like...THEY STOLE OUR IDEA!!!

I was flipping through the mag, and rested my eyes on a page, where there was a picture of a China Bag...the stripey plasticky big bags you find in the market...and don't know where else. It caught my attention because it was quite big, and had striking colours like white, blue, red on it. Then, upon further examination of the fine print beside the picture, I realised, it is actually a LV plaid travel bag. LV....LV bag designed after a China Bag. First thought: THEY STOLE OUR IDEA!!!! Unbelievable...our idea is now a designer item.

You see, when I was studying in the Uni, we used to go on field trips. And during field trips, we sometimes have to collect plant specimen. Hence, we always brought along these big China Bags from the lab to put the plant collections. As most of my classmates were ladies, we didn't quite enjoy carrying the bags, 'cuz they didn't look very glam. So, we started calling them the Prada bags. Each time, we went out for fieldtrip, we'll ask if we brought along our Prada bags, just to make ourselves happy.

Can't believe it....our idea was actually, eventually, taken up by these high fashion designers....we should have copyrighted the notion...

Now, I'm more convinced my Grass-cutter horror flick will eventually make it for the Cannes Festival..or maybe the Oscars. On a sorta related note, don't you wonder why The Departed won Best Director at the Oscars? I really think the award should go to the Hong Kong director instead.

  3. Qing Qing,

Neither can I afford one. No car, no bag... no worries, I use a S$28 bag to work, think fully depreciated by now.

And nope, when people speak to the Executive, they will know whether the Bag is a facade for the emptiness or the person is really worth the salt. =)

The joy of the bag is momentary... more importantly, love your job, embrace the challenges and you will go a long way.
